The Competition

  • We have been given a rare opportunity to show off our children’s work by way of a national competition. The prize is ₤10,000 to spend on playground equipment.
Our children need to ‘own’ the entry; therefore we have planned two weeks of focused activities with this theme. This will give the children an opportunity to research, plan and evaluate what activities they would like to spend the money on to improve our playground as this will be the theme for our entry.
Some children have already decided a climbing frame would be great fun! And others would like a trampoline!
Over the 2 weeks the children’s curriculum will focus on ‘the playground’

All our lessons will have this theme, some children will be

    Measuring the playground
    Drawing a playground plan
    Singing playtime songs and poems
Creating a graph from a tally chart

    Others will be researching by

    Asking questions
    Finding out
    Working out costs
    Using ICT

During this time children will record their work using photographs and video, at the end of the week this work will be collected together and sent off to the competition organizers.

During this time children will be writing and asking questions to find out what other year groups would like, this will also give them the opportunity to ask grown ups their opinions, what they think would be nice in the playground and what activities they enjoyed as children.
If you have an opportunity to support your child in this period please tell us about your ideas and experiences by leaving a comment.

I remember that we used to have a climbing frame with a monkey bar, we had so much fun trying to be the fastest to get across.
I also remembered we had huge blankets which we had out in the summer, we used to either sit on them on the grass or make dens to shade us from the sun!
good luck with this project!

This sounds like a great idea, it would be great for the children to have some other activities in the playground, to help them to keep fit, let off steam! or just have some fun together, We will help in any way we can!

After our first week of research, the children found out the most wished for piece of equipment is a climbing frame. What would you wish for?

I would wish for a giant space ship, inside it would have a control area, a pilot area, and for the girls it would have a galley area and living quarters.
I would wish for it to have lots of doors and climbing ladders and ropes.
Good luck
